89. Visit a Real Dairy
How many people have ever had the opportunity to visit a real dairy? Most of us have never had a first-and experience of seeing a cow being milked on a dairy farm. Some kids grow up thinking that milk just comes in plastic containers at the store and that some factory made it.
One of the best things you can do to limit the impact on the environment and improve your own food supply is to buy local. This reduces the energy consumed in transporting dairy and produce and lessens the chance of cross contamination from huge processing plants.
We have a dairy nearby that has for generations produced quality dairy, farm and ranch products. The Dyer Dairy is just east of Georgetown on Highway 29. The Mercantile at Dyer Dairy has pure whole raw milk that you can taste and you can visit the gardens and meet the farmers. The animals are cared for with no hormones or antibiotics and only healthy animals are milked. The milk is so popular that you have to call in advance to reserve your milk as it sells out daily. There are substantial health benefits to drinking raw milk and it tastes so good!
They have wonderful raw milk cheeses made with the raw milk and aged to perfection. Seasonal fruits and vegetables are available, bulk raw, roasted and salted peanuts, organic pinto beans, organic black-eyed peas, organic black beans and organic popcorn, raw local honey, preserves, peanut butter, grass raised beef. free range eggs and more!
If you'd like to try your hand at making cheese from the raw milk, they even have cheese-making kits, cultures and rennet.
